When the going gets tough, it’s tempting to get going, but is it the right thing to do?

In a recent survey I asked participants whether they thought their current relationship would last a lifetime.

There was a huge difference between the responses of those who are married compared to those who are not (see below) but what the results really highlight is the large number of you who are uncertain about the future of your blended family.

If you’re thinking about ‘throwing in the towel’ check out the responses to the following question:

Do you expect your current relationship to last your lifetime?

Married        YES     77.2%        NO     5.4%        UNSURE     17.4%

Unmarried    YES     42.6%       NO     2.1%         UNSURE     55.3%

It’s hard to experience peace when you’re living in ‘limbo’ not knowing for certain if your relationship is going to survive.  It’s also stressful for the children in your blended family.

If children sense that blending is a ‘trial’ or that you’re less than 100% committed to making your relationship succeed, they are more likely to be resistant towards their stepparent and your blended family.  In fact, there are some children who will attempt to sabotage their parent’s relationship if they think they have a chance at succeeding.
